What are the benefits of resin bound surfacing for commercial use?

Strength: The load-bearing strength of the underlying layer (usually composed of tarmac or concrete) means that resin bound surfacing is perfect for large traffic areas such as car parks, private roads, and public walkways.

Fast setting time: When the public is relying on a surface to be ready within a short time frame, it’s essential that surfacing can be installed and available to use promptly. Resin bound surfacing boasts a rapid setting time and is normally ready to be used by the next day.

Attractive looks: The charming appearance of natural stone is far more eye-catching than the dull greyness of concrete or tarmac. And with a variety of stone colours available, it’s easy to find the right shades to suit a surface and its use.

No-Fading: Unlike tarmac that loses its jet back colour after a few years and starts to look worn and tired unless a new seal coat is added. resin bound keeps its colour for over 15 years with a yearly power wash. The polyurethane resins used protects the stone from UV degradation, so your new surface will continue to look brand new.

Non-slip: In high traffic areas, of both drivers and walkers, it’s important that a suitable grip is obtainable in icy weather. The stone texture of resin bound surfacing offers excellent friction to keep the public safe when travelling across it.

Porous - SuDs compliant: Water can easily seep through the stone matrix of a resin bound surface, which helps deter flooding. It also has the advantage of allowing easy passage of water to plant roots, allowing them to flourish and grow even when surrounded by the stone surfacing.

What does the UK Government say?

You will not need planning permission if a new or replacement driveway of any size uses permeable (or porous) surfacing which allows water to drain through, such as gravel, permeable concrete block paving or porous asphalt, or if the rainwater is directed to a lawn or border to drain naturally.”

If the surface to be covered is more than five square metres planning permission will be needed for laying traditional, impermeable surfaces that do not provide for the water to run to a permeable area”

Commercial Resin Bound Vs Resin Bonded. What is the difference?

There are two types of common external resin surfacing systems, with very alike names, often confused, the important thing to remember is; one is permeable, and the other is non-permeable.

Resin bonded’ is sometimes also used as a generic term for both systems. This can be misleading since the systems are very different.

Resin Bound: Resin bound surfacing mixes stone, quartz or marble and a clear polyurethane resin together; and is then hand trowelled onto a solid sub base, the size of the stone for this system ranges from 1mm to 12mm and every particle is entirely encapsulated in resin.

Resin Bond: Resin bound surfacing is made up of dry aggregate, which is scattered onto a resin base, with the excess swept off, to create a more rough, impermeable Typical stone size for this system ranges from 1mm to 6mm and can often become loose.
