How to Measure a Driveway, Patio or Garden.

When starting a new garden or driveway project, it is important to correctly measure the space you are working in. This will put you in a position where you will be able to get quick rough estimates over the phone before you even begin, Especially if you require a service that works in a square meterage rates for a basic job, any bespoke work is always priced separately to the client.

Follow these quick steps and you’ll be able to measure like a pro in no time. 

You will need:

• Pencil
• Piece of paper 
• Tape measure
  

DRAW THE SHAPE OF THE SPACE

If a resin bound overlay is a option, separate the different surfaces, for example If you have a  tarmac or a concrete surface currently and you want to expand onto some grass, or if you have ½ flags  ½ concrete once you have an over all you will measure theses separately (Insert photo here)

MEASURE THE LENGTH AND THE WIDTH IN METRES AND CENTIMETRES. 

If you want a driveway border measure all the driveway were you want the border to run. 

DO THE CALCULATIONS 

Multiply the length and width numbers together to find the total square metres of the area.  For example a 10m long and 4m wide driveway would be 40 square metres.  

WHAT IF THE AREA ISN’T A SQUARE OR RECTANGLE?

Draw the different areas so that they are broken up into a number of easy to measure squares, rectangles or triangles.  

Measure each of the areas separately, calculate the number of square metres for each area then add them all up

• Each square is  length multiplied by width.
• Each rectangle is length multiplied by width.
• Each triangle is length multiplied by  width, then divided by 2.
